A talking clock - Talkie part 2

This is the second story about ESP32 speech synthesizes. This time we are going to build a talking clock.

This story leans on two previous stories. The first one is about getting the accurate time by consulting an internet time server, You can re-read that story here:

The second story is the story about Talkie. Talkie is a speech synthesiser for the ESP32 that sounds like the old (think Apple ][) computers. For letting the ESP32 talk you need the Talkie library and an amplifier or active speakers. Hardware

I am using the same setup as I used in the first story about Talkie. So read that carefully and build ot re-build the breadboard setup I used there.



The button is attached to pin 13 (D13) and a pull-up resistor makes sure the pin is high till the button is pressed.

The amplifier is attached to pin 25 (D25) and only the left input is used. So attach the speaker to the left output.

Make sure you use a decent power supply. I am using a USB power outlet with two connections. The first is connected to the ESP32 and the other one powers the amplifier.

Software

The previous story about Talkie gave you a framework to start with. I am just expanding that framework with the library that gets the exact time from the internet.

This is a really long program but most of the lines are checks for the figures of the hours and minutes which are then spoken by the software so it is easy to comprehend.

I am going to give you the details first and at the end is the complete program.

The program starts with getting the necessary libraries.

Here the offset for the time-zone is defined. The value 60 * 60 is 60 minutes * 60 seconds. Replace this with the offset for your own time-zone.

Fill in your own credentials otherwise the ESP32 can not connect to the internet to get the right time.

These lines define the words that are going to be spoken.

The void() decimals routine decides which number is going to be said for minutes and hours. The numbers to be spoken run from 1 to 59 so we cover all 24 hours and 59 minutes.

The setup() routine starts with initialising the Serial port so we can monitor what is happening. Next a connection is made with your router and the internet. The actual time is fetched and printed in the Serial monitor. This way you can be sure that everything works as it should. Nothing special here.

The loop() is where the magic happens.

The routine will only be activated when you press the button. Otherwise the clock would constantly be talking which is fun for a short while but then gets annoying. Next to that constant updating the time over the internet will presumably annoy the NTP servers. So press the button to get the time.

Here the time is collected from the NTP server and printed in the Serial monitor.
The hours are extracted in the variable hours.

First a test wether it is in the morning. If so your ESP will say "Good morning the time is"

This does the same but tests wether it is noon and makes the ESP say so.

As we know the hour and that is stored in the variable hours we put it in a helper variable with the name decnumbers and call the decimals() routine. This routine will speak out the number.

We repeat this for the minutes. The variable decnumbers gets the minutes and calls again the decimals() routine which speaks the number.

Now the sequence is complete. So when you press the button the ESP32 wil say out loud:

Good morning the time is XX hours XX minutes

or

Good afternoon the time is XX hour XX minutes.

That is all.
A lot of lines of code but not complicated. The Talkie library makes this easy to do.
